There’s sad, and then there’s—

This week I read two stories I had trouble processing, both out of Zimbabwe. First, President Mugabe threw himself a $250,000 birthday party featuring a 187-pound cake while thousands of his countrymen continue to die each month. (Though the Times has the details, the CS Monitor points out the painful absurdity of the event.) Then, a few days later, Prime Minister Tsvangirai, Mugabe’s longtime opponent, loses his wife of three decades in a car wreck in which he was also hurt.
